Chapters 41-51 Due Monday, October 10

Chapter 41
This is an important chapter which contains descriptions of attributes of the 3 miniaturists--one of whom is the murderer. Read the descriptions of the painters attributes carefully. Master Osman tells us "genuine artists have an instinctive desire to draw what's forbidden!"(p253)

Chapter 42
A contest is devised to entrap the murderer. What is this contest and what will be the clue used to identify the murderer? Black is fearful that he will himself be caught up in the contest. Master Osman reveals his fear that this is the end of an era in Islamic painting. (p272)

Chapters 43, 44, 45
We observe each of the miniaturists drawing the horse. We learn more about each. At the end of each of these chapters, the miniaturists reveal a statement about how they feel about their painted images. These are important statements to help identify the murderer. Anyone want to take a "stab" at who the murderer is?

Chapter 46
The murderer tells us he knows the competition to draw the horse is a trap.

Chapter 47
This chapter is told from the point of view of Satan. An interesting line on p288:
If all men went to Heaven, no one would ever be frightened, and the world and its governments could never function on virtue alone for in our world evils is a necessary as virtue and sin as necessary as rectitude." Do you agree?

Chapter 48
Shekure shares that she suspects Black may be the murderer.

Chapter 49
Master Osman and Black are taken into the Sultan's secret treasury to identify the specific technique that will identify the painter of the horse and hence the murderer. What do you think is Mater Osman's true motive for getting into the Sultan's treasury?

Chapter 50
This chapter told by Two Dervishes found on a painting in the Sultan's treasury. They tell a tale of how they fooled a Venetian painter.

Chapter 51
Master Osman is overwhelmed when he finds and gets to examine one of the rarest paintings in the Sultan's treasury a work by master Bihzad. Master Osman then does a horrendous thing. What did Master Osman do? Why did he do it?

The contest consists of having each of the minaturist quickly draw a horse from memory without relating the drawing to a story. The clue that would identify the murderer is flaired nostrils on the nose of the horse.

Perhaps Stork because he doesn't draw the horse himself but makes a template out of another drawing. He may be afraid that if he draws the horse it will reveal him as the murderer. But, it may also just mean that he was insecure in his ability to draw a horse so he decided to copy a previous drawing.

I agree that evil exists and because it exists it must have some reason for being, perhaps a test to see if we choose evil or choose good.

Master Osman, as an artist, was most likely interested in seeing all the art 'treasures' that were locked away in the Sultan's treasury.

Master Osman blinded himself using the same plume needle that Master Bihzad had used to blind himself. Why did he do it? I think he did it in an attempt to save the old method of illustrating and not be influenced by the new methods introduced by the Franks and Venetians.

Answers that indicate very thorough reading. I am guessing some of the answers are Ray's and some are Jackie's.

I also think the murderer is Stork for about the same reason. He is more apt to copy anothers work so most likely to draw the horses nose that they are looking for.

I think evil exists only because we make it so. The proof is that there really nothing evil in nature. Only humans bring evil into the picture and only we can prevent it. It is not a necessary part of our world, but we can't seem to resist it :(

Jan, Ray didn't answer any of the questions for these chapters yet. He says he is on Chap. 40 but I think he read more chapters than that but went back to reread something and forgot where his last read page was. I think when he starts reading again he will remember where he left off.

Also, I tried to start a blog for The Why Cafe but I don't know where it went or how to find it. LOL We should be finally finished with My Name is Red within a week, I hope.
