Chapters 30-40 Comments due 9/19/11

Chapter 30 - Shekure discovers her father's body. This is an interesting chapter describing Shekure's and Hayriye's reactions to the Enishte's death.

Chapter 31 - Written by the color red. A beautiful and imaginative chapter where red tels us it is half serious and half mirthful and also that colors are not know, but felt.(p187)
Have you ever felt a color?

Chapter 32 - Shekure and Black plot to hide Enishte's death.
Can you list one of the reasons they want to do this?
Shekure gives Black 4 stipulations to follow if she agrees to marry him.
What are these stipulations?

Chapter 33 - Black obtains the divorce he needs to marry Shekure and they decide to keep Enishte's death a secret until after the wedding. Shekure adds yet ANOTHER stipulation before she will marry Black.
Can you list this?
We also learn that the murderer stole the last painting from Enishte's house.
Did you find situations in this chapter that were humorous?

Chapter 34- Everyone is feeling guilty and fears being accused of Enishte's murder. In this chapter, Shekure tells us about her fears for her children. Black is confronted by Hasan.
Can you list one of her fears for her children?

Chapter 35 - This chapter is told by a horse. The horse brags about it's beauty and criticizes miniaturists who have never gone off to war and therefore incorrectly depict its gallop.

Chapter 36 - Black mulls over the paintings made for the forbidden book and comes to the realization that they hold the secret of who the murder is. The children are told of their grandfather's death. Black goes to report the death Enishte to the Head Treasurer and turns over the 9 forbidden illustrations. It is noted that the 10th and last illustration, which was to to be a portrait of the Sultan, was taken by the murderer.

Chapter 37 - Enishte returns to us one last time to let us know how it feels to pass through to death and that he is pleased with his funeral. Enishte admits that he desired to have his own portrait painted in the Venetian style, but was frightened and settled on having the Sultan's portrait painted.

Chapter 38 - This chapter is written by Master Osman, who grieves over the fact that the style of paining that he has devoted his life to will now change and become less significant. He is summoned by the Head Treasurer who tells him about the secret book, that his miniaturists were working on it and that Enishte has been murdered, probably because of it. The Head Treasurer tells Master Osman that the Sultan demands two things of him.
Can you name these two demands from the Sultan?
We find out that Olive, Stork, Butterfly and Black are the murder suspects and that there are intentions to torture them to find the guilty party.

Chapter 39 - Esther helps attend to the women while the men are at Enishte's funeral. She learns of the suspicions that Enishte was dead before Shekure and Black were married. Shekure sends Esther to Elegant Effendi's widow to find out why that widow whose husband died under similar circumstances has not sent her condolences to Shekure.
Why did Elegant Effendi's widow ignore acknowledging Enishte's death?

Chapter 40 - Black is summoned to the palace. He is frightened of being tortured by the guards to admit to Enishte's murder and he regrets he hasn't even had the chance to make love to his new wife yet.
On his way to the palace, Black picks up something that he thinks is a token of good fortune sent by Allah.
What is this good luck token?
Black is tortured but does not admit to the killing. The Sultan then orders the torture to be stopped and Black is informed that Master Osman has been given three days in which to interrogate Olive, Stork and Butterfly and disclose the murderer and come up with the missing illustration. Black is to assist him.
What will happen if they fail?

I just read the blog outload and Ray and I are ready to tackle the next chapters. I wonder why anyone would think that torturing someone would get them to tell the truth? Rays says they will just get name, rank, and serial number, that is it. Or the tortured person may agree to anything just to stop the torture. Either way the truth is not found - or is found by the torturing of the other minaturist?

Don't forget to send me your mailing address Jackie. tHANKS

LOL! I wrote a comment and left my address when you first asked for it but I must have forgot to hit the 'publish you comment' button. I did the same thing again and had to write this again. I thought I many have posted it under the comments section of the previous chapter but I went back to look but nothing is there, and I forgot to hit publish first so I lost the first post I wrote here. So, let me try again. Here is our mailing address:

We are going to need a few more days to get these chapters read. It seems we have been out and about more and have less time for reading lately. We should be caught up by Tuesday.

I don't know what happened to my post about the next reading. Ray suggested the short story that Nick lent him, The Why Cafe. Or what do you think of the book, Pride and Prejudice and the Zombies? We have the Pride and Prejudice and the Zombies on our Kindle. The Why Cafe loan time has expired so we would have to buy that one. Or do you have any other suggestions? We are open to suggestions.

Thanks for the address. I don't know how many times I've written comments and then not hit "post." I hate when that happens. I never remember all that I posted the first time. But, because I can be long winded especially in writing, it's probably a good thing :)

I too am having a busy week, so lets push the due date on the current chapters till next Monday. We are almost done anyway (thank God!) I originally loaned the Why Cafe to Nick because I thought it would help him. I have that on my Kindle and can loan it to you but since I can only loan it for 2 weeks, I will wait until we are finished with "Red" to do so. That is a wonderful and very easy to read short story with alot for us to ponder about. I've not heard of Pride and Prejudice and the Zombies---are you serious?

Don't forget to take Ray for some good (Turkish) coffee, just to push the envelope on acceptable conventions.

Cheers,
j

Jan, I don't find your writings long winded at all so not to worry. When I reread some of my own posts I see mistakes and wonder what the heck was I trying to say. lol....I need to learn to proofread before I hit send. But, then again I often write these at the end of the day when I am very sleepy, and it shows too.

Next Monday sounds good for the current chapters. That way we won't have to rush through them.

Ray says he is eager to get through the book, plodding along. I think some Turkish coffee might help. Ray says, a good cathartic.

Good idea about waiting until we finish My Name is Red before we start reading The Why Cafe and discussing it. I wonder if Nick would like to join in?

Yes, for real about the Pride and Prejudice and the Zombies. My niece is a teacher for first year college students and she was considering using it as a book in her class. That's how I found out it existed. Then it was on sale on Amazon.com for $1.99 so I purchased it but havent't started reading it yet.

Looking forward to getting back into reading the current book.

Okay, we have caught up now with the reading. Now to find some time to answer some of the questions.

I will start with the last question: what will happen if Black fails to find the murderer?

If Black fails to find the murderer he will be tortured and the 3 minaturist will also be tortured.

It was interesting that Black stated when he was anticipating the torture that he was thinking about just confessing so the torture would stop. I wonder if torture really gets a person to tell the truth?

What is this good luck token?

The good luck token that Black found was a gold coin. He thought it was a sign that everything was going to go in his favor and he would be protected.

Why did Elegant Effendi's widow ignore acknowledging Enishte's death?

Kalbiye blamed Enishte for being responsible for the death of her husband, Elegant Effendi. She said everything happened as a result of the illustrations.

Jackie said...

Can you name these two demands from the Sultan?

The first decree is that the book be completed as soon as possible. The second decree is that the murderer, if it is one of the minaturist, be found and punished. He called the murderer a 'black hearted devil'.

Can you list one of her fears for her children?

Shekure feared that Hayriye would have guardianship of the children passed on to Hasan.

Shekure adds yet ANOTHER stipulation before she will marry Black.
Can you list this?

Shekure will not marry Black unless she has a bride's procession followed by a reception with a wedding dinner.

Chapter 33 - Did you find situations in this chapter that were humorous?

Ray found asigning human qualities to the cat humourous, such as the cat objecting to Black thinking he should not take things too seriously because the cat reminded Black that almost everyone thought he (Black) had a hand in his uncle's murder. And Black considering the cat to be bold and brazen.

I thought the whole idea of Shekure, Black, and Hayriye pretending that Enishte was still alive while covering up the smell of his corpse was humorous in a morbid way. Ugh!

Shekure gives Black 4 stipulations to follow if she agrees to marry him.
What are these stipulations?

1. Black would need to move in with Shekure and live in her father's home.

2. Black must swear before two witnesses that if he treats her badly or takes a second wife he will grant her a divorce with alimony. And Black must swear before two witnesses that if for whatever reason he is absent from the house for more than a 6 month period without a visit she will be granted a divorce with alimony.

3. Shekure will not allow Black to share her bed until the murderer of her father is found and the Sultan's book is completed.

4. You must love my children as if they were your own children.

3. 4.

Chapter 32 - Shekure and Black plot to hide Enishte's death.
Can you list one of the reasons they want to do this?

Shekure needs to be grated a divorce from her former husband that has not returned from battle for over 6 months so she can be free to marry Black. If her brother-in-law discovers that Shekure's father is dead he will try to force Shekure to move back into her father-in-laws home.

Have you ever felt a color?

Ray says he has only felt a color as in blood on his body from a cut or a wound. He says it felt sticky, gooey, and warm.

I have felt colors when I see them. The color of green feels like reguvenation. The color of yellow feels warm. The color blue feels calm. The color black feels like something bad might happen. The color orange feels like things are in harmony. The color purple feels disturbing. The color red is energetic and powerful. The color brown feels fulfilling because dirt is brown and from dirt comes produce. The color white feels like everything has been washed clean and a new beginning is starting again.

Ray/Jackie: Wow, such great work reading all those chapters and answering all those obscure questions!
Very interesting discussion, Jackie, of how you feel colors and what you feel. I am a color loving person. I don't understand why anyone would paint their walls white. There is a trend now in decorating toward black and white. I find it cold and non-commital. It's like people want to be generic and not share their true passions with others. Perhaps they are afraid to let their real likes be known. Not sure. Anyway, my house is filled with color and each room is painted a different color--NOT a decorator's dream to be sure :)

I found the episode of Black and Shekure hiding Enishte's body to be funny and morbid as well. Good thing it was wintertime.

Now, on to the conclusion!!!!!
